The Herdegen Story….
One Hundred and Forty Four Years of Quality
Paul Herdegen who emigrated in the 19th century from Nurnberg, Germany to Chelles, France, close to Paris, founded the Herdegen Company. Paul's name was originally written with a double "r" as Herrdegen, which means swordsman in German. During the war of 1870 between France and Prussia, he changed the spelling to Herdegen with a single "r" in order to avoid this Prussian sound. The company he founded in 1860 was dedicated to the production of walking sticks, umbrellas, hats, leather gloves and other fashion items.

As the company was growing quickly and to find a better location closer to his customers he relocated the company in 1870 to Place de la Republique in the heart of Paris where it remained for almost a hundred years. It was during this period that Jean Herdegen, son of Paul, introduced many new walking stick designs including the white cane for blind people, which he developed together with the famous association for the blind, Valentin Huy.

In 1982, Antonine Herdegen, grandson of Paul and the current owner, moved the company to Les Lilas in the Paris suburbs and expanded the product line into the medical field. The first medical products were grab bars and forearm crutches. Under the leadership of Antoine, sales in the Home Care market and the number of products grew rapidly. A second factory was built in 1989; a third one in 1991 and two more were added in 1998/1999. Production capabilities include metal fabrication, chromium plating, painting, micro-mechanism, and woodworking. The company is now the largest manufacturer of forearm crutches and commode chairs in Europe and the leading supplier in the Home Care market in France with over 200 products, all manufactured in France. Products include bath and shower equipment, walking aids, commode chairs, crutches, canes, beds and accessories, and many other Home Care items.

Design and utility have always been a characteristic of French products. The Concorde, the TGV high-speed train, Channel no. 5, the Eiffel tower, and so many other things come to mind when one thinks of French design. Now the Herdegen health care line is added to that list.
